Voedselconsumptiepeiling 2003 : onderzoek bij jongvolwassen Nederlanders : focus op macrovoedingsstoffen [Food consumption survey 2003: A study among young Dutch adults. Focus on macronutrients]
article
Dietary monitoring is an important tool for policy evaluation and development. Since 1987, national food-consumption surveys are conducted in the Netherlands. To fulfill better the requirements for answering current food-policy questions the system needs revision and in 2003 a first study was conducted among 750 Dutch young adults (aged 19-30) using a new setting. Information on food intake was obtained by a computerized 24-hour dietary recall on two independent days. In this paper the intake of energy, macronutrients and dietary fiber is presented as well as the most important food sources and the contribution of meals to nutrient intake. Regarding macronutrients, the intake of fat, particularly the intake of saturated fatty acids, needs special attention. Only 11% of men and 6% of women consumed a diet with less than 10% energy saturated fatty acids. Also the guideline for dietary fiber was hardly met. The new approach is considered to be suitable to apply in a broader population.
