Fire safety in tall buildings: needs and criteria
conference paper
From a fire engineering point of view, the large height of tall buildings constitutes two specific fire risks. One of these is that - depending on the available fire brigade equipment - beyond a certain height, external attack by the fire brigade is not possible. Ample attention is therefore needed in order to avoid exterior fire spread. This may call for a special facade design, including the facade geometry, and the use of fire proof materials and appropriate building components. Also, the structural behaviour in case of fire may, for tall buildings, be more critica! than for low rise buildings. Key factor here is the possible occurrence of progressive collapse, which may seriously endanger not only the occupancy of the building but also those present in the direct vicinity. A proper overall fire design of the main load bearing structure is therefore necessary.
