Physical load in the Dutch meat processing industry

In this study risks of physical overload were determined in the Dutch Meat Industry. The central questions of these research are: which professions entail high risk factors on physical overload and which measurements can be taken? To investigate the risks flowcharts were made of all production processes in the different slaughterhouses. The workplaces where manual tasks were carried out were analysed for risk factors such as RSI-risks. working postures. movements, and forces Of the worker positions in the meat industry 23% carried a high risk (red), 41 % an increased risk (orange), and 36% carried no increased risk (green) on physical overload. In this study possible measurements were analysed in case-studies and discussed with practical experts of the sector. Besided technological changes improvements can be reached bij rotation between functions and by improvement of personnel management. Also management style, worker qualifications, and staff career planning offer possibilities to reduce physical load.
