The future of the petro-chemical industry: a MARKAL-MATTER analysis
report
MARKAL-MATTER model results regarding the impact of greenhouse gaspolicies on the petrochemical industry in Western Europe are discussed from an integrated chain perspective. The MARKAL-MATTER model gives insight how different technologies might develop in the next decades at different emission permit prices. First, the present situation in the petrochemical industry is described. Next, techno-economic emission reduction options are discussed. The results of this modelling study show that up to 75% emission reduction can be achieved in the life cycle of petrochemicals through various emission reduction strategies. However, significant costs are involved with these strategies and the R and D effort should focus on new and non-traditional research areas. 69 refs.
