Possibilities and impossibilites of alternative antifouling techniques

The following alternatives to TBT and other toxic paints are discussed in this paper: coatings based on naturally antifouling compounds, non-stick coatings and the periodic removal of fouling (cleaning). Other alternative antifouling techniques have not made significant developments in the last few years and do not have (yet) much relevance for use in practice. The overall conclusion is that alternatives to TBT and other toxic coatings potentially exist and will become available in the (near) future.
