Physical modeling versus numerical modeling
conference paper
Despite the widespread use of numerical modeling, there is still room for physical modeling today for many reasons. E.g., physical modeling is based on real wave propagation whereas numerical modeling is based on algorithms which are by necessity simplified and discretized versions of the 'real world'. Furthermore, a numerically modeled, full-size, wide-band, 3-D, elastic data set of tens of millions of traces is simply not yet affordable. In our paper we compare the quality of data acquired in our physical modeling facility with numerical data. In both cases the model is the same complicated salt structure.
