Sonar waveforms for reverberation rejection. Pt.1: theory

conference paper
The influence of the waveform of the transmitted signal on the signal to reverberation ratio induced at the processing output of a moving sonar array is analysed on an theoretical basis. Three main classes of signals are analysed: wide band signals with a flat spectrum (for instance FM signals), continuous wave signals and wide band signals with a comb spectrum. The basic parameters considered in the analysis are: tow ship speed, target Doppler, signal bandwidth and beam pattern characteristics. The analysis is performed for a linear receiving array and is is shown that significant improvement of reverberation rejection can be obtained on moving targets by using wide band signals with comb sprectrum instead of FM or CW signals.
