X-Stream: the most comprehensive glass furnace simulation tool

conference paper
Mathematical simulation is one of the most powerful tools for the design, optimisation and trouble shooting of glass melting furnaces. A new computer code named X-stream has been built by TNO. X-stream is able to simulate the glass melt and the combustion space simultaneously. Besides the computation of the flow fields and the energy equation, the main models are: batch, electrical boosting, bubbling, stirring, foam, combustion, turbulence, radiative heat transfer, volatilisation and refractory corrosion. Particle tracing, with the computation of glass quality indices, and the computation of the melt-redox state is also integrated in the program. A major advantage of this integrated approach is the important physical dependencies can now be taken into account, such as the reactive volatilization od glass melt species with species from the combustion space, or the influence of the redox state on the radiative heat absorption.
