The development of a proposal for revission of the severity of disabilities scale of the ICIDH : personal care, body, locomotor and dexterity disabilities : phase 1 and phase 2

report
Within the context of the revision of the classification of disabilities of the ICIDH this project aims at developing a proposal for the revision of the severity scale for disabilities in personal care, locomotion, body disposition and dexterity. Instead of developing a new severity scale, in this project relevant items of existing validated and/or frequently used measures of severity of disability are related to the formulated research questions. At first an an inventory was made of 96 measures, which are in use at this moment in different research areas such as population surveys and statistics, rehabilitation, vocational assessment, nursing homes etc. Secondly the relationship between a selection of the most frequently used and valid and reliable disability measures and the items of the ICIDH-D was analysed. Each of the relevant items in the various disability measures was related to the corresponding item in the classification of disabilities. Most measured parts of the ICIDH-D were 'clothing', 'walking', 'disability in transfer to the toilet', 'bathing', other personal hygiene', 'feeding', 'climbing stairs', 'tranfer' and 'subsistence'.
