Hybrid Carlab: realisation and testing of a series hybrid vehicle
conference paper
TNO Automotive has developed a series hybrid powertrain and successfully integrated it in a Volkswagen New Beetle. This project, called Hybrid CarLab, has the following goals: Benchmark of the fuel consumption, emissions and driveability of a series hybrid vehicle compared to a conventional vehicle over a range of different driving cycles; Assessment of the possible market applications for series hybrid powertrains; Technical research into control strategies and various energy storage systems; Usage of Hybrid CarLab as a future platform for the development and demonstration of new technologies. The results from the tests show that a fuel consumption reduction of more than 25% can be achieved using the series hybrid powertrain with the MVEG driving cycle (4.8 1/100Icm vs. 6.5 1/1001cm). In urban cycles an even higher reduction can be found (around 35%). With respect to emissions, it is concluded that EURO 4 can be achieved, but only when the NOx can be reduced sufficiently. The control system provides high flexibility for evaluating different control strategies and optimisation of, for instance, driveability.
