Harmonizing the European Side Impact Dummy

A major problem in side impact protection is the specification of the dummy used in the compliance tests, which is both a standardization and a technical problem. Currently, Europe and Japan use the EUROSID-1 dummy while the US.SID is used in North America. ISO initiated the WorldSID project to develop a single mid-sized male side impact dummy with improved biofidelity and world-wide acceptance. Interim harmonization could be reached with the upgraded EUROSID dummy, ES-2. Areas for improvements of EUROSID-1 have been identified based on world-wide input. The dummy proposed changes include modifications to the hardware, additional instrumentation and improved certification procedures.
