Modelling and simulation of tyre behaviour in MADYMO: the Magic Formula tyre model

conference paper
Tyres determine to a great extent the dynamic behaviour of road vehicles. The mechanical characteristics of the tyre in contact with the road combined with the mechanics of the vehicle produce operational characteristics of the tyre-vehicle system which should guarantee vehicle stability to the driver. Therefore an accurate description of the tyre-road phenomenon is required. One of the new features in MADYMO 5.2 is the availability of MF-Tyre for the calculation of tyre forces. The main features of MF-Tyre for steady state behaviour are combined slip calculation of tyre forces and a sophisticated calculation of aligning torque. Furthermore, simulation of transient tyre behaviour is supported by MF-Tyre. The definition of user scalable factors in MF-Tyre allows adjustment of tyre characteristics. The results show that when neglecting the effects of combined slip, it can result in simulation results that indicate better stability than the actual vehicle will have. Furthermore, the use of user scalable factors in MF-Tyre is demonstrated in a single sine test with various road conditions. The tyre characteristics are adjusted for low friction by altering the peak friction coefficient. In the example, the vehicle becomes unstable for low friction values. The general conclusion is that with the introduction of MF-Tyre in MADYMO 5.2, the main requirement for use of MADYMO in vehicle dynamics simulations has been achieved.
