Will we be able to predict the braking distance?
conference paper
In times of strong economic growth mobility of mankind has increased to a high level. A high level of mobility is a measure for success and prosperity. However, increasing mobility also puts higher demands on the used network. It is the challenge to maintain and increase the capacity of a road at the highest safety level possible. The skid resistance of the road surface is one of the parameters that will influence the traffic
safety. Up till now, in The Netherlands skid resistance has been evaluated by means of a statistical relation between the skid resistance value and accident risk [1]. The research has been performed in the early sixties. However cars as well as road surfaces tend to change, so for that reason a more detailed approach would meet the demands better.
