Simulation of fracture of laminated glass

conference paper
The influence of car glazing on the safety of occupants and pedestrians is an important issue. Nearly half of the injuries during crashes are due to head injuries, from which a large portion is due to head contact with the windshield or side windows. In order to assess the behavior of windshields in impact, it is important that the fracture behavior is modeled correctly. A first setup of a (laminated) glass damage model was made using the ORTHOLIN model in combination with SHELL4 elements, which allows the definition of layers. The composite damage model MADYMO was changed, such that the damage model corresponds better to the brittle glas behavior, the strength distribution of glass is taken into account. Furthermore it was assumed that the microflaws in the glass are randomly oriented.
