Prediction of the TBM force spectrum for new tunneling projects in The Netherlands

conference paper
This paper describes the results of a preliminary study that aims to derive the characteristics of the TBM as source of possible vibrations. The dynamic force delivered by the TBM and the spectral description of the source are studied. Further, the relationship between characteristics of the TBM and measured vibrations is also taken into consideration. The objective of the study is to derive an approximated and relatively inexpensive TBM model. The results of this research show that it is possible to estimate the force exerted by the machine in terms of power. The relationship between power of the TBM and diameter, if validated, would be a powerful tool to model the boring process in Dutch soil conditions. In fact, given the diameter of the TBM and comparable boundary conditions (soil, excavation depth, etc.), the correspondent spectrum might be derived and used as input for prediction of vibrations.
