The environmental performance of solar energy systems and related energy saving installations

conference paper
Renewable energy systems are contributing to environmental protection if looked upon from the energy point of view. But also aspects like resource depletion and waste production need attention. A desired large-scale introduction of renewable energy systems will require large quantities of resources in the future. Therefor, the philosophy of sustainable development should apply to renewables too. Now the introduction of renewables is developing and the markets are growing, the time is ripe to put extra emphasis on eco-efficient design. A case study is presented showing the environmental balance in favor for large area low performing systems when compared to 'standard of the shelf' collector design
