Electronic communication in the building and construction industry: What will eConstruct bring about?

The paper presents the aims and goals of a recently started new European project (IST' 10303) titled eConstruct, from electronic Business in the building and construction Industry: Preparing for the New Internet. The project focuses on the development of Internet communication technology that can replace many of the traditional communications encountered in current building and construction practise. The opportunity follows from the coming introduction of the so-called "Next Generation Internet" (NGI), the Internet for structured information exchange using new technologies like XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) and re-lated standards. This paper describes the project's scope, purpose, baseline, how eConstruct relates to other initiatives in more detail and discusses the first results of the project
