Dynamic behavior of composite ship structures (DYCOSS). Failure prediction tool

conference paper
This paper is concerned with methods for modeling progressive failure in dynamically loaded ship huil structures of laminated composite materials. Attention is focussed to joints, as these are most susceptible to failure. Three failure modes are considered: delaminations along secondary bondlines, cracking of inserts made of isotropic materials and delamination of the composite material itself. Because of principal differences in their nature, separate models have been defined for each of these modes. The methods are implemented in the DYNA3D explicit finite element code. Their performance is illustrated by two applications
