A DIANA study on the Shearwater gas-field
article
depth. The reservoir pressures are near lithostatic (100 MPa) and the temperatures are approximately 180°C. As a result of these high temperatures feldspars in the reservoir rock have been dissolved during diagenesis and as a result of the near lithostatic pressures the thus created porosity has been preserved. Part of the reservoir rock has porosities of over 30% and shows in uni-axial compaction experiments pore collapse and significant creep at pressures well in the range of the planned depletion. Also the associated compaction strains were well in the range of the critical compaction strain of the completion. Therefore an extensive study was undertaken to enhance the compaction tests, to better determine the critical compaction strain and to improve the assessment of the in situ stress evolution during depletion and its effect on compaction strains, subsidence and sand failure.
