The durability of concrete structures in major marine works in the Netherlands

conference paper
durable material which withstands the test of time well. This also applies to concrete which encases steel in the shape of reinforcing steel or prestressing steel. That this is not a matter of course has been recognised from the moment that concrete started to be used. In particular, the risk of corrosion of the reinforcement was given atten-tion in the design phase and led to requirements being made on the concrete cover of the reinforcement. Apart from this the durability was scarcely a serious design aspect. This led to a certain nonchalance in practice on the part of designers and constructors alike. The result of this attitude is well known: a great number of instances of damage. In the mid-eighties in the Nether-lands, the concrete decay affair made the headlines. This caused a kind of shock wave that led to more serious attention to outdoor concrete structures. The research into decay mechanisms and methods of repair was given new drive and the regulations were tightened.
