European activities in LCA of forestry and forest products

conference paper
The aim of this paper was to survey running European projects and literature in the field of LCA. This proved to be a difficult task.
• 68 running or recently completed European LCA and related projects were identified so far. Where information was given, the total value of these projects was approximately 17 MECU.
• Recommendations for collecting LCA literature on forestry and forest products are:
there should be an open access system (for example by Internet) so that
participants can enter their own publication information
the title and keywords should be in a chosen language (English?)
there should be a restricted format so that approximately the same information is
available from all contributors
there should be a restricted list of keywords
duplication should be avoided where possible
alternatively, publications could be sent to an existing commercial database
• One aim of the Action could be to encourage future collaborative European projects on LCA of forestry and forest products. Possible areas which could be studied in this Action or in collaborative projects are:
common terminology and common processes so that information can be transferred and compared
the complexity of the wood products chain in comparison to other materials (production)
the boundaries between one product life cycle and another (end of life) how to deal with extensive land use and sustainable forestry in comparison with other products (land use)
