Dutch vascular dementia study: objectives, design, first data

conference paper
It has been estimated that vascular lesions or thromboembolic processes are the cause of dementia in 10 to 40ol. of demented pat¡ents. Controversy remains regarding the existence ol a definable category of dementia in which vascular factors are the single or most important etiological factor. ln this study we aim to answer lhe following questions: - Which vascular, thrombogenic and metabolic risk factors tor dementia can be identified, and what might be their etiological significance? - Which of these factors can be identified thal determine the prognosis of cognitive impairment in subiects with .dementia? - How well does the current conventional diagnostic classification of vascular dementia ':relate to the cardiovascular risk prolile? A cohort of approximately 7850 subiects will be sludied cross-sectionally, and followed for 3 years. The workup consists of cardiovascular history taking, measurement of vascular disease, neurological and neuropsychological examination and extensive laboratory investigations. The study population will be based on two source populations: the population based Rotterdam Study (age > 55 y), and the Rotterdam Stroke Databank, a registry ol stroke patients. lnterim analysis per B/94 showed an overall prevalence of approxlmately 5.3%. The highest prevalence was observed in the subgroup with cerebrovascular disease; the lowest in the group w¡thout vascular disease.
