Investigation on the exposure of hairdressers to chemical agents

article
Concentrations of compounds released from hairdressing products such as ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, ethanol, propane, butane, volatile organic compounds, and dust particles were measured in hairdressing salons. When compared with general accepted standards for the work place (threshold limit values, TLVs), the probability to exceed these limits is small even in 'worst case' situations. Odor thresholds are exceeded of compounds such as ethanol and ammonia. The comfort limit of 1200 μL/L CO2 is exceeded in the winter season in the investigated naturally ventilated salons due to insufficient ventilation, especially on busy days (Fridays and Saturdays). CO2 concentrations of up to 2600 μL/L were measured.
