Capacitor bank driven rail accelerator experiments for plasma armature research

conference paper
In this presentation, a summary is given of results of the first i:eries of electromagnetic launch experiments recently performed with the capacitor bank driven rail accelerator facility at the TNO-Pulse Physics Laboratory.
The first part of the presentation concerns the description of the launcher facility and the improvements that have been made and the results of experiments with polycarbonate blocks of 1.7 gram. Velocities of 2140 m/s have been achieved at efficiencies of 7.5 %.
In the second part an analysis of the behaviour of the experimental set-up is made using the circuit analysis programme PSpice. Simple models of the accelerator and the armature have been implemented in the programme. The simulation results show, that this programme can be used very well as a tool for analysis of possible improvements of the launcher set-up.
