The promo study : prospective research on musculoskeletal disorders in office workers

conference paper
From August 24-29, 2003 in Seoul, Korea the XVth Triennial Congress of the International Ergonomics Association and the 7th Joint Conference of Ergonomics Society of Korea / Japan Ergonomics Society were held about "Ergonomics in the digital age". This paper is about prospective research on musculoskeletal disorders in office workers. The project addresses the following questions: a. What are the risk factors among computer users for development of distal, or forearm and hand Work-related Upper Extremity Disorders (WUEDs) and for proximal, or neck and shoulder WUEDs (symptoms, signs, disability and sick leave)? Special attention will be paid to duration of keyboard and mouse use, work-rest schedules, variability of tasks and the amount of precision needed during mouse tasks. b. What are the work-related risk factors for productivity loss sick leave due to WUEDs? c. Is female gender a risk factor or an effect modifier of WUEDS among computer users and if so, is this explained by physiological differences and/or differences in job characteristics (e.g. task variability, work-rest schedules) or non-work exposures (e.g. household activities, child care)?
