Behavioural aspects of developing or sustaining neck and upper limb disorders

conference paper
From August 24-29, 2003 in Seoul, Korea the XVth Triennial Congress of the International Ergonomics Association and the 7th Joint Conference of Ergonomics Society of Korea / Japan Ergonomics Society were held about "Ergonomics in the digital age". This paper is about behavioural aspects of developing or sustaining neck and upper limb disorders. VDU workers in many companies in the Netherlands are at risk for developing neck and upper limb disorders. Usually the solution for preventing and diminishing them is found in ergonomics and the reorganization of tasks. In this study 144 employees were questioned on their symptoms, their behaviour, on workplace ergonomics and work organization. The respondents with neck and upper limb symptoms experienced higher work pressure and limited workplace support compared to colleagues without symptoms. They also showed significantly more ‘unhealthy behaviour’. Employees with complaints, more often than employees without complaints, do not take (lunch)breaks and impose a high work load upon themselves. Company culture was identified as an important factor in the creation or maintenance of unhealthy behaviour.
