Status of the Kapitza facility at TNO PML-Pulse Physics
conference paper
The Kapitza facility at TNO PML-Pulse Physics consists of a 100 kJ fast-discharge bipolar battery, a semiconductor opening switch and a pulse transformer with a 24 : 1 turns ratio. The semiconductor opening switch operates at the 10 kA/10 kV level. This paper presents the principle of operation of the 10 kA/10 kV Kapitza facility and the experimental results, which are compared with the simulated ones. Experiments with a 5 kA/10 kV switch module resulted in a secondary current pulse, which rises within 150 μs to a peak value of 135 kA.
