Finding and implementing the optimal rhythm in short cycle time assembly
conference paper
From August 24-29, 2003 in Seoul, Korea the XVth Triennial Congress of the International Ergonomics Association and the 7th Joint Conference of Ergonomics Society of Korea / Japan Ergonomics Society were held. The central theme was "Ergonomics in the digital age". The subject of this paper is finding and implementing the optimal rhythm in short cycle time assembly. Rhythm, defined as the repetitive pattern of actions in time of an individual worker, is increasingly recognized as a crucial factor in short cycle time assembly. Rhythm includes aspects like cycle time, action variation, work content and work rest schemes, and it affects productivity, quality, worker’s motivation and worker’s health. By the organization of the assembly process, the company management has a lot of influence on the rhythm of their workers. However, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the quantitative effects of rhythm aspects on the production and the workers to be able to answer the most relevant rhythm questions of companies. To investigate these questions and to implement improvements, a 3-years project is conducted in a large high-volume assembly company.
