Participation : a key for intelligent manufacturing

bookPart
To meet demands on short delivery times manufacturers are forced to improve the flow of assembly orders. Therefore humans performing the assembly operations should be motivated to increase productivity and flexibility. To achieve this, a participatory approach ‘PSIM’ was developed that could be applied in companies. PSIM means Participative Simulation environment for Integral Manufacturing enterprise renewal. In PSIM both a procedure and dedicated software were developed and tested in five companies in Europe, Japan and the US. The PSIM participative simulation prototype supports companies in developing new organisational structures and technology in which humans can perform healthier and better. The companies evaluated PSIM positively as a ‘breakthrough’ innovation in the field of business and work. Based on the approach new successful projects were initiated. The application showed that productivity increases of 10-45 per cent in combination with a more motivated work force were achieved.
