Model predictive control as a tool for improving the process operation performance of MSW combustion plants

conference paper
In this paper a feasibility study is presented on the application of the advanced control strategy called model predictive control (MPC) as a tool for obtaining an improved operation performance for municipal solid waste (MSW) combustion plants. The paper starts with a motivation for applying MPC to MSW combustion (MSWC) plants. This is followed by a discussion on the basic idea behind MPC. After that, mainly through comparisons between MPC and conventional combustion control systems for a typïcal MSW combustion control problem, an assessment is made of the improvement in process operation performance that MPC can provide in comparison to conventional MSW combustion control systems. This assessment also provides a demonstration of some of the main features of MPC.
