Effect of Dutch waste policy on methane emissions

other
For various reasons, Dutch waste policy has been dramatically changed in the last decade. Prevention of soil and groundwater pollution and a reduced occupation of the scarce space were important reasons for this change. An important effect of this policy is a reduction of the amount of organic materials landfilled, ultimately resulting in a 65-85% reduction in methane formation and emissions.
When all costs for changing waste policy are attributed to methane mitigation, changes in waste policy proves to be a rather expensive measure for reducing methane emissions. So waste policy as in the Netherland is not expected to be implemented in regions where these other reasons are less important, due to geological or climatological reasons. However specific aspects of the Dutch policy, such as prevention and reuse might pay-off here as well.
