Electrostatic discharge initiation of Cl-20: Effect of discharge time and spark energy

conference paper
In this paper, experimental results on the electrostatic discharge (ESD) initiation of energetic materials will be shown, based on an apparatus built at the University of Pardubice. This apparatus is designed so that the discharge capacitor and the reststance of the discharge circuit can be easily changed. In addition, the voltage across the spark gap and discharge current can be measured. At TNO the apparatus is further developed, by the addition of a Pearson current monitor (to more accurately measure the discharge current), and a photo diode with optical fibre to detect the reaction of the sample.
Standard ESD tests classify the susceptibility of an energetic material to ESD in terms of the energy available from a charged capacitor. It is well known that the fraction of energy of the capacitors that produces the spark, is a function of electric circuit parameters and the design of the switch. Measurements of the total spark energy are made and found to be less than 10% of the energy initially stored in the capacitors
