A mobile facility for destruction of munitions and explosives
conference paper
Munitions and explosives that must be destroyed are usually in a poor condition. This is certainly the case with uxo from past wars. Any transportation of these munitions must be avoided. TNO developed a mobile concept for the handling of uxo for the Netherlands MoD.
This facility makes use of waterjet cutting and washout to separate the explosives from the metal parts of the ammunition. The explosives are subsequently desensitized by water and additives so that transport and storage will be possible as Class 4.1 materials. Final destruction can be realised in a commercial waste incinerator.
