Pulsed energy supplies for future electric armament (Energie électrique impulsionelle pour les armements électriques du futur)

conference paper
As is occurring in several areas of society, the advance of electricity in military equipment offers new opportunities. Especially in the domain of armament (i.e. guns, lasers, microwave generators and armour) new possibilities for the application of electric energy supplies occur. Combined with electric drive/propulsion of military platforms (i.e. vehicles and ships), the application of electricity in armament leads to improved manoeuvrability and survivability of the platforms and strongly increased effectiveness of their weapons.
Amongst others, armament requirements to deliver the electric energy in a train of very short pulses has led to the new application of electric energy for pulsed operation. It requires a well-balanced and efficient combination of a pulsed electric energy supply and the load which launches the projectile or generates the laser beam, etc. Moreover, for mobile systems, pulsed electric energy supplies have to meet very hard restrictions in size and mass.
Together with the technology of pulse forming networks for very high current and energy pulses, the state of the art of and near term expectations for the development of pulsed electric energy supplies for especially electric energy guns are discussed.
Promising components such as pulsed electric machines, superconducting inductors, fast discharge batteries and solid state switching networks are highlighted.
