Description, results and prospects of the Kapitza facility at TNO PML-Pulse Physics Laboratory
conference paper
The Kapitza facility at the Pulse Physics Laboratory consists of a 100 kJ fast-discharge bipolar lead-acid battery, a semiconductor opening switch and a pulse transformer with a 24 : 1 turns ratio. At the moment, the semiconductor opening switch operates at the 10 kA/lO kV level. This paper presents the principle of operation of the Kapitza facility, the status of the fast discharge bipolar battery, the 10 kA/10 kV semiconductor opening switch, and the experimental results. The semiconductor opening switch was tested up to the 10 kA level. The output current pulse rises within 150 μs to its peak value of 240 kA.
