Acoustic Helicopter and FW Aircraft Detection and Classification
conference paper
The possibility to detect the passage of aircraft (either propeller or jet) with one or more mechanical wave sensors (acoustic or seismic) is investigated. An existing algorithm-sensor demonstator can detect and classify helicopter targets. In its current form it is developed to reject other targets. The current work is performed to find out if it is possible to combine a nerw aircraft detection algorithm with the existing helicopter demonstrator. An initial combination of an algorithm to detect propeller, jet aircraft and helicopters was programmed on a demonstration system. The system consists of a triangular array of three rnicrophones, signal conditioning hardware, AD board and PC running Matlab to perform the processing. Target bearing estimation can be added during the pre-processing of the acoustic signal. Further algorithm development will be carried out using the results of the recent measurements during a large airshow. lnitial results shorw that detection and classification into target type (helicopter, jet- or propeller aircraft) is possible. Type identification will be a more challenging task. of which the possibilities can be investigated using the data gathered during the recent field trial
