AFFIRM; A system for Autonomous Early and Reliable Forest Fire Detection

conference paper
The AFFIRM project is aimed at the development and demonstration of a system for early
and reliable wild fire detection. The system consists of a network of autonomous terminals
disseminated in the forest area and linked to an operations centre through a satellite
communications link. The terminals contain video cameras and image acquisition and
processinq equipment to detect the smoke plumes associated to starting fires as soon as the
smoke is in the view of the camera. Early detection of the smoke plumes associated to
starting fires allows taking fire fighting actions when the fire is still small in size. Satellite
communications are ursed to minimise lhe need for infrastructure in the terminal location. In
the operations centre an artificial intelligence technique involving case-based reasoning is
used to filter out false alarms.
