Infrared Measurements of Energy Release and Flame Temperatures of Forest Fires

The infrared measurements of energy release and flame temperature of forest fires in the
frame of the European project EFAISTOS are described in this paper. The measurements are
obtained during two different measurement campaigns at the INRA test facilities in Les
Vigneres. During the first campaign, thermal imagery is obtained, and based on this imagery a
spatial distribution of energy release of the fire has been studied. Based on these radiation
measurements the temperature can be calculated for easier interpretation, the calculated
maximum temperatures reach 1100oC for the fire front.
