ALF, an experimental low frequency active sonar

ln 1991, the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) assigned a research study on Low Frequency Active
Sonar (LFAS) to the TNO Physics and Electronics Laboratory (TNO-FEL). As a part of this research
project an experimental LFAS system referred to as ALF was planned. ALF has been specified by TNO-
FEL and manufactured by Thomson Sintra ASM, and has recently been delivered to TNO-FEL. The signal
processing and display facilities have been developed byTNO-FEL.
The paper addresses the technical and research aspects of the ALF system. From 1995 until 1997 the
LFAS research programme will be performed with the aim to investigate the performance of this system during
a number of sea trials.
