A new synthetic route to reduced collagen crosslinks (LNL and HLNL) is described in this report. It enables an enantioselective synthesis of LNL. HLNL was obtained as a mixture of two diastereoisomers. This method also provides the possibility to introduce radio-labels during the synthesis.

It has been shown that proinflammatory and antiinflammatory cytokines correlate with disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS). To establish whether such correlations depend on the disease stage, we assessed in a longitudinal fashion the expression of interleukin (IL)-12 (p40 and p35), tumor necrosis factor- 1/4 , interferon-γ, and IL-10 mRNA...

The formation of cured mortar structure in masonry was studied using multiple experimental techniques. Starting with fresh mortar, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to measure the water extraction during brick laying. After curing, the composition of cured mortar was investigated with polarizing and fluorescent microscopy (PFM) and X-Ray...

The water extraction out of mortar during brick laying was studied using nuclear magnetic resonance. The experiments show that using a fired-clay brick, the water is extracted out of the mortar within 3 minutes, whereas in the case of a sand-lime brick this takes about 10 minutes. Prewetting a fired-clay brick hardly affects the water extraction...

The aim was to identify suspect collagen cross-links in dentine, eluting close to known cross-links in ion-exchange HPLC. Bovine tooth roots as source of dentine were powdered, demineralised, reduced, and acid-hydrolysed. Cross-linking amino acids were isolated from the acid hydrolysate by size exclusion, adsorption, and sequential ion exchange...

Using 1H NMR two diastereoisomers of the ethacrynic acid glutathione conjugate (EASG) as well as ethacrynic acid (EA) could be distinguished and quantified individually. Chemically prepared EASG consists of equal amounts of both diastereoisomers. GSTP1-1 stereospecifically catalyzes formation of one of the diastereoisomers (A). The GSTP1-1...

Fibre armatures have been studied both dynamically and statically to gain insight in their electrothermal and mechanical behaviour. In the first part of this paper, the results of launch experiments with single and multi-segment copper and molybdenum fibre armatures integrated in carbon-fibre reinforced launch packages are discussed. The launch...

The moisture transport in mortar and mortar joint often is an important parameter in degeneration of brick masonry and other block constructions. In this study, the influence of single additives on the moisture transport properties of mortar is investigated. Due to water extraction during brick laying, curing conditions of mortar in mortar joint...

The population of folliculo-stellate (FS) cells of the rat anterior pituitary has been shown to be ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically heterogeneous. Based on the overlap of ultrastructural characteristics, the localization in the anterior pituitary and the co-expression within the same cel of the S-100 protein (a marker for FS cells)...

1. In order to study the antigenotoxic potential of eugenol in humans, ten healthy non-smoking males ingested a daily amount of 150 mg eugenol or the placebo for seven consecutive days. After a washout period of one week, groups ingesting eugenol or the placebo were crossed and received the other treatment for seven consecutive days. 2. On days...

Quantitative structure - activity relationships (QSAR's) are described for the rate of conjugation of a series of fluoronitrobenzenes with cytosolic as well as with two major alpha and mu class enzymes of rat and human liver, viz., glutathione S-transferases (GST) 1-1, 3-3, A1-1, and M1a-1a. In search of synthetic high affinity ligands for the mannose receptor, we synthesized a series of lysine-based oligomannosides containing two (M2L) to six (M6L5) terminal alpha-D-mannose groups that are connected with the backbone by flexible elongated spacers (16 Å). The synthesized cluster mannosides were all able to displace binding of...

Development of drug resistance against alkylating cytostatic drugs has been associated with higher intracellular concentrations of glutathione (GSH) and increased expression of glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes. Therefore, enhanced detoxification by the glutathione/glutathione S-transferase pathway has been proposed as a major factor in...

Nonenzymatic and glutathione S-transferase (GST) catalyzed glutathione (GSH) conjugation has been postulated as a mechanism by which alkylating cytostatic drugs can be inactivated intracellularly.
