A monolithic manufacturing process is presented for the realization of active-matrix meshed thin-film-transistor (TFT) arrays on foil with physical voids between pixels, realizing membrane-like electronic arrays. The process is scalable to large-area substrates and enables (improved performance of) biometrics-under-display applications. Moreover...

In recent years there is an increasing interest to integrate optical sensing in mobile displays, for instance, for biometric fingerprint scanning functionality. There are several routes to incorporate optical fingerprint functionality within the full display area, each with their own benefits and challenges. Here we investigate the different...

We apply a photolithographic patterning process to integrate a green phosphorescent organic light emitting diode (OLED) with a polymer‐based organic photodetector (OPD) side‐by‐side with resolution up to 635 ppi. The characteristics of OLED and OPD before and after patterning are investigated. The crosstalk between OLED and OPD subpixels and the...

In atomic layer deposition (ALD), thin layers of materials are deposited on a substrate with atomic layer precision in the vertical direction. The ability to control layer growth in the lateral direction as well is expected to greatly increase the potential of ALD as a path to the bottom-up additive fabrication of electronic devices like solar...

Electronic travel aids (ETAs) can increase the safety and comfort of pedestrians who have a visual impairment by displaying obstacles through a vibrotactile navigation belt. Building a complete picture of relevant obstacles and finding a safe route requires ETA users to integrate vibrotactile cues over time and space in their tactile working...

Despite the emergence of head-worn displays at work around forty years ago, few studies have appeared about their impact on job content. To investigate this, a systematic literature review was conducted on these devices and job content, defined as job demands and controls. In total, 3481 studies were identified using five scientific databases....

This paper presents a new compensation principle using a 2T1C pixel circuit. The implementation shows significant improvement in uniformity for all grey-levels, due to compensation for both VT and β-factor variations. The resulting current variation after compensation in the characterized display area reaches values down to 0.079%.

Objective: We tested whether a procedure in a hexapod simulator can cause incorrect assumptions of the bank angle (i.e., the “leans”) in airline pilots as well as incorrect interpretations of the attitude indicator (AI). Background: The effect of the leans on interpretation errors has previously been demonstrated in nonpilots. In-flight,...

Despite advances regarding autonomous functionality for robots, teleoperation remains a means for performing delicate tasks in safety critical contexts like explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and ambiguous environments. Immersive stereoscopic displays have been proposed and developed in this regard, but bring about their own specific problems, e...

Background. A Head Mounted Display (HMD) is unlike all other displays fixed to the head, making eye movements the sole option to scan the display. While the largest saccades easily exceed 50 deg (Collewijn et al., 1988), naturally occurring saccades typically stay within 15 degrees (Adler & Stark, 1975). While attractive for many applications, a...

The current state of the art of video coding lacks specific tools to efficiently deal with ultra-high resolutions such as 8K video both at a hardware and software level. At the same time, the increase in video resolutions combined with a larger variety in display resolutions results in a need for spatial scalability at low computational...

We hypothesized that an incorrect expectation due to spatial disorientation may induce roll reversal errors. To test this, an in-flight experiment was performed, in which forty non-pilots rolled wings level after receiving motion cues. A No-leans condition (subthreshold motion to a bank angle) was included, as well as a Leans-opposite condition ...

Thin-film transistor (TFT) technologies have long been used predominantly for display fabrication and are attractive for large area, low cost and flexible circuit applications. Thanks to the improving performance of thin-film metal-oxide NFC tags and data processing chips on foil [1], [2], fabs are considering the large-scale production of...

The aim of the present study was to investigate how display density affects attentional guidance in heterogeneous search displays. In Experiment 1 we presented observers with heterogeneous sparse and dense search displays which were adaptively changed over the course of the experiment using genetic algorithms. We generated random displays, and...

Patterning organic materials by photolithography enables not only high-resolution, side-by-side RGB OLED arrays, but also the introduction of organic photodetector in the same frontplane. We show patterned active matrix displays processed on flexible backplane. Furthermore, we demonstrate OPD patterning proof-of-concept. These are the building...

While numerous studies show that brain signals contain information about an individual’s current state that are potentially valuable for smoothing man–machine interfaces, this has not yet lead to the use of brain computer interfaces (BCI) in daily life. One of the main challenges is the common requirement of personal data that is correctly...

We present a thin-film dual-layer bottom barrier on PI that is compatible with 350°C backplane processing for OLED displays. We demonstrate OLEDs that survive bending over 0.5 mm radius for 10.000x. Furthermore, we show compatibility of the bottom barrier with the backplane process by fabricating AMOLED displays on GEN1-sized substrates.
