Advanced material development, including at the nanoscale, comprises costly and complex challenges coupled to ensuring human and environmental safety. Governmental agencies regulating safety have announced interest toward acceptance of safety data generated under the collective term New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), as such technologies...

Gas extraction from the Groningen natural gas field, situated in the Netherlands, frequently induces earthquakes in the reservoir that cause damage to buildings, and pose a safety hazard and a nuisance to the local population. Due to the dependence of the national heating infrastructure on Groningen gas, the short-term mitigation measures are...

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate which prepartum determinants contribute to the development of postpartum (PP) fatigue among working women in the Netherlands. Methods A prospective cohort study in 15 Dutch companies was conducted to measure different potential predictors using self-administrated questionnaires at baseline and...

Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) have gained huge commercial interest because of their unique and size-related physicochemical properties. The diversity and complexity of ENPs is increasing with the introduction of next generation nanoparticles. The current approaches are not able to assess the safety of all types and applications of ENPs....

A test matrix of antifouling (AF) coatings including pMMA, an erodible binder and a novel trityl copolymer incorporating Cu 2O and a furan derivative (FD) natural product, were subjected to pontoon immersion and accelerated rotor tests. Fluorescence and optical microscopy techniques were applied to these coatings for quantification of organic...

In the summer, the available of solar heat exceeds the total heat demand of a building, but in the winter the heat demand is exceeding the solar supply. For the future conversion of a passive house into an energy neutral house, a solution is to store the excess of solar energy in summer, and to use it to meet the heat demand in winter. Water is...

The heat demand in the summer can be completely fulfilled using solar heat, but in the winter the heat demand is exceeding the solar supply. A solution is to store the excess of solar energy in the summer, and to use it to fulfill the heat demand in the winter. Water is traditionally used for storing heat (e.g. solar boiler), but seasonal heat...

Thermochemical reactions are one of the most promising means for compact, low loss and long term storage of solar heat in the built environment. The heat can be stored by making use of a reversible chemical reaction. In theory, an energy density 5-10 times higher than water can be reached. Additionally, no storage losses are associated with...

An evaluation is presented of the economical feasibility of seasonal heat storage of solar heat with sorption materials. The seasonal sorption heat storage is shown to pay itself back over its lifetime, under the assumptions presented. Attention is given to the verification of the assumptions, since these have a large effect on the conclusions.
