Author Hulzebos, C.V. van Dommelen, P. Verkerk, P.H. Dijk, P.H. van Straaten, H.L.M. Publication year 2013 Abstract Background:Severe unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia may cause deafness. In the Netherlands, 25% lower total serum bilirubin (TSB) treatment thresholds were recently implemented for preterm infants. Objective:To determine the rate of hearing loss in jaundiced preterms treated at high or at low TSB thresholds.Design/Methods:In this retrospective study conducted at two neonatal intensive care units in the Netherlands, we included preterms (gestational age 35 dB).Results:There were 479 patients in the high and 144 in the low threshold group. Both groups had similar gestational ages (29.5 weeks) and birth weights (1300 g). Mean and mean peak TSB levels were significantly lower after the implementation of the novel thresholds: 152±43 μmol/L and 212±52 μmol/L versus 131±37 μmol/L and 188±46 μmol/L for the high versus low thresholds, respectively (P Subject HealthHealthy for LifeHealthy LivingHumanLS - Life Style CH - Child HealthBSS - Behavioural and Societal Sciences To reference this document use: http://resolver.tudelft.nl/uuid:baf2ddf8-5ab5-4d4a-b87f-b52ea3360337 DOI https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0062858 TNO identifier 471998 ISSN 1932-6203 Source PLoS ONE, 8 (8) Document type article Files PDF hulzebos-2013-evaluation.pdf
