A global approach for assessment of exposure to road traffic noise

conference paper
The noise mapping performed for the Environmental Noise Directive is used to evaluate noise exposure of the population. This requires a significant effort and consistent data collection and application of calculation methods. It is well known that considerable variation in noise mapping results can occur due to uncertainty in input data. For these reasons it is also useful to have an alternative method to assess average exposure levels and annoyance for whole countries or the whole EU. A global approach is presented in this paper that uses average vehicle noise emissions, characteristic road types and traffic flows, population distribution along roads and dose-effect relationships to obtain estimates for exposure and annoyance levels.
