Abstract
Deep sea international ports are competitive businesses serving the transshipment needs of shipping lines linking seaborne freight with hinterland connections. The level of service is one of the im-portant decision factors for the shipping lines' decision on whether to call at a port. Therefore, port per-formance is a vital competitive component of the port functioning, while the nautical service chain at the port can be considered as a complex system. Continuous improvement in port performance is an im-portant goal of the organizations working at the port. Due to the fact that the port system consists of a number of organizations with their own independent goals, other than normative approaches are needed. This paper presents a conceptual descriptive Agent Based Model Simulation (ABMS) for the port nauti-cal services, by describing the port as a complex system, which takes into account operational complexity and interdependency between the partjes working on the handling of deep sea ships
