Abstract
A comparative examination of Patho-Tec reagent-impregnated paper strips and the corresponding classical biochemical tests for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae was made. Patho-Tec papers appeared to be reliable for the cytochrome-oxidase and phenylalanine-deaminase tests. The urease test papers gave false negative reactions in Citrobacter and Enterobacter isolates, but never in Proteus strains. The lysine-decarboxylase test papers gave too many false positive results. These shortcomings of the strips interfere with fast and reliable identification of Salmonella-like Enterobacteriaceae. Chemicals/CAS: carboxylyase, 9027-22-9; cytochrome c oxidase, 72841-18-0, 9001-16-5; hydrolase, 9027-41-2; urease, 9002-13-5; Aminohydrolases, EC 3.5.4.; Carboxy-Lyases, EC 4.1.1.; Cytochrome-c Oxidase, EC 1.9.3.1; Urease, EC 3.5.1.5
