Abstract
ln this paper the authors give their view towards the future wilh regard to stability and the codes. Attention is given to thin-gauge columns sensitive to local buckling, flexural buckling, lateraltorsional buckling and distortional buckling. The phenomena of flexural buckling behaviour of thin gauge columns a¡e described using the results ofcolumn buckling tests. It is pointed out that despite the fact that the calculated design values given by Eurocode 3, part l 3 [1], are close to those ofthe tesLs, they do not describe the physical behaviour accurately. It is also concluded that the prescribed buckling curves might not be in accordance wilh the test results. With this in mind, the authors give some suggestions how to update existing design rules. The main subjects to focus on a¡e the stub-column test, the definitions ofthe line ofaction and system Iine, and the buckling curves. Also some rema¡ks a¡e made about the process ofupdating design rules for other global buckling modes
