Learning communities: Een begripsbepaling en verkenning van leerprocessen en kennisbenutting [Learning communities: A conceptualization and principles of learning and knowledge utilization]

Learning communities are increasingly popular to promote the development of knowledge and skills at work. Learning communities are communities in which employees and experts from different organizations co-actively learn and innovate. Despite their seemingly added value in practice, scientific research into learning communities is underdeveloped: especially studies that explore the underlying mechanisms of learning in learning communi-ties are scarce. This is unfortunate because knowledge about the functioning of learning communities can provide useful insights on how to optimize learning in learning communities. In this article, we argue that research on learning and knowledge utilization in learning communities should take into account the unique characteristics of learning communities, such as their inter-organizational character and the dynamic transfer of knowledge gained in the learning community to the organization. We discuss directions for future research to understand the functioning of learning communities. With this fundamental knowledge, we can more effectively design learning communities that contribute to lifelong learning among the workforce.

Learning communities worden steeds populairder om de ontwikkeling van kennis en vaardigheden op het werk te bevorderen. Learning communities zijn leer-werkgemeenschappen waarin werknemers en experts van verschillende organisaties samenkomen om van én met elkaar te leren en te innoveren. Ondanks positieve geluiden vanuit de praktijk is het wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar learning communities schaars en ontbreken studies die de onderliggende mechanismen met betrekking tot leren en kennisbenutting in learning communities verkennen. Dat is een gemis, omdat kennis over de fundamentele werking van learning communities nuttige inzichten kan opleveren over hoe leren in learning communities geoptimaliseerd kan worden. In dit artikel stellen wij dat onderzoek naar de werkende mechanismen van zowel het leren in learning communities als de benutting van kennis in organisaties, rekening moet houden met de unieke kenmerken van learning communities, zoals het inter-organisationele karakter. Daarnaast bespreken we richtingen voor toekomstig onderzoek om de werking van learning communities te doorgronden en learning communities effectiever vorm te geven om bij te dragen aan een leven lang ontwikkelen. Dit artikel vormt daarmee een goede basis om wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar learning communities verder te brengen.
