Learning and Development (L & D) in the public sector is an underexplored topic. The aim of this chapter is to gain insight in the L & D issues that public sector organizations are confronted with and how they deal with them. The chapter shows that, in line with the more traditional public sector recruitment and development model, L & D was, is and will remain a focal point in HR policies in public sectors. The public sector offers a broader range of L & D activities to their employees, and could be a good example to many organizations in the private sector. However, the chapter illustrates that in general both the L & D activities provided in public sector organizations and the L & D needs of employees are focused on remaining productive in the current job, and not so much on future changes in their job, or changing jobs, which are numerous. The two cases presented in the chapter show that public sector organizations are in fact turning the tide and currently develop and implement a richer and more varied set of L & D practices aimed at enhancing futureproof (professional) development of employees, teams and organizations. © Bram Steijn and Eva Knies 2021.
