Abstract
Increasing resistance against impact, either from other ships, floating objects or icebergs, will make shipping safer. Lean Duplex, which is in the stainless steel family, has high strength, and corrosion resistance. Lean Duplex is investigated focusing on its crash resistance in raking scenarios as part of an ongoing project. Material characterization is performed via tensile tests on dog bone and notched dog bone specimen. Punch tests are performed to find the fracture point at biaxial stress state. The results of these experiments provide datasets that cover a range of triaxiality, as a result of which a failure forming limit curve (FFLC) of the material is obtained. FFLC can also be created by the single parameter criterion, a plane stress reduction of the Modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The paper provides comparison of FFLC based on experimental results and the single parameter criteria, giving evidence on the applicability of this simple method. © 2020 Taylor and Francis Group, London.
